Meet Our Clinical Fellows

Fellows are physicians who have completed four years of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and are further specializing in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility. They are involved in performing ultrasound monitoring as well as procedures such as saline sonograms, intrauterine inseminations, and egg retrievals. All of the senior physicians at UCSF CRH are dedicated to training the next generation of exceptional fertility doctors.

Jacob Christ

Clinical Fellow

Jacob Christ obtained his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University and Medical Degree from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine where he completed a Fulbright fellowship studying polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in the Netherlands. He subsequently completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Jacob is a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine androgen excess special interest group and is involved in ongoing research on health outcomes among patients with PCOS.

Maren Shapiro

Clinical Fellow

Maren Shapiro studied Molecular and Cellular Biology and Health Policy at Harvard College and earned her medical degree from The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. During medical school, she spent a year as the Stanford-NBC News Global Health Media Fellow, working in the communications office at the South East Asian Regional Office of the World Health Organization and the Medical Desk at NBC News. Maren completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brigham and Women’s/Massachusetts General Hospitals in Boston, MA. 

She is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. 

At UCSF, her research interests include patient experience, the impact of exercise on IVF, and endometriosis.

David Huang

Clinical Fellow

David Huang obtained his medical degree from Brown University and was appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellow at MIT. David completed his residency in OBGYN at the University of California, San Francisco. David’s clinical interests include assisted reproductive technology and reproductive surgery.

His research at UCSF primarily focuses on understanding how various endometrial conditions and uterine pathologies affect embryo implantation and early pregnancy development. 

David Huang

Clinical Fellow

David Huang obtained his medical degree from Brown University and was appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Fellow at MIT. David completed his residency in OBGYN at the University of California, San Francisco. David’s clinical interests include assisted reproductive technology and reproductive surgery.

His research at UCSF primarily focuses on understanding how various endometrial conditions and uterine pathologies affect embryo implantation and early pregnancy development. 

Alisha Tolani

Clinical Fellow

Dr. Alisha Tolani is a Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility Fellow at the University of California, San Francisco. She attended Stanford University and received the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel and James Lyons service awards for her work on mental health and gender-based violence. She received a J. William Fulbright Fellowship to study women’s health initiatives in Honduras. She returned to Stanford for medical school and residency and served as an Administrative Chief Resident. She has worked as a volunteer doula domestically and internationally and as a Clinical Research Coordinator for investigator-sponsored and FDA clinical trials in Family Planning. She has also worked at the American Public Health Association, Planned Parenthood, and Mother Teresa’s Orphanage.

As a fellow at UCSF, she is leading two randomized controlled trials. The first is evaluating sperm preparation methods prior to intrauterine insemination on pregnancy rates, and the second is examining barriers to semen analysis completion via clinic versus mail-in at-home testing among patients seeking infertility care at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She was selected to participate in the UCSF Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program. She continues to work on advocacy and policy initiatives in collaboration with the Alliance for Fertility Preservation, RESOLVE, and ASRM. She is committed to advancing fertility care for medically complex patients, reducing health disparities, and working on health systems and technological innovation to expand access to care.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, scuba diving, trying new cuisines, and spending time with her partner Sid and dog Blue.  

Alisha Tolani

Brett Stark

Clinical Fellow

Dr. Brett Stark, MD, MPH is a board-certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Brett Stark obtained his master's in public health from Harvard University and his Medical Degree from Georgetown University. He subsequently completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at UCSF. Brett's clinical interests include LGBTQ+ family building and access to fertility care.
